Privacy Policy
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Quietlane plans safe bike rides and guides you along them. We built it to need as little of your data as possible. There are no accounts, no adverts, no analytics and no tracking. Your rides stay on your iPhone.
This policy explains what the app does with information, who else is involved, and the choices you have.
The short version
- No account. You never sign up or give us your name or email to use Quietlane.
- Your rides, routes and places stay on your iPhone. We don't receive or keep them.
- Your location is used to plan and guide your ride. Route points are sent to our route planner over an encrypted connection and are not logged or stored.
- We never sell or share your data for advertising. The app contains no advertising or tracking code.
- Optional features are off until you turn them on: Share my ride, Apple Health and ride suggestions.
Who we are
Quietlane is made and run by Jasper Sion, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). Jasper Sion is the data controller responsible for the app and for the information described here. You can reach us at support@cycleai.co.uk.
Information stored on your iPhone
These stay on your device and are not sent to us:
- Your home and saved places (for example “Work” or “Mum's”)
- Your ride history, including the GPS track, distance, time and climbing
- Saved routes and favourite stops
- Your settings and preferences
- The natural voice, if you download it
They are included in your iPhone or iCloud backups if you have backups turned on. Deleting the app deletes them.
Information used to plan and guide your rides
To plan a route, the app has to share some information with the services that do the work. Every connection is encrypted.
- Route planning. Your starting point, the places you want to go through and your route preferences are sent to Quietlane's route planner. It works out the route and sends it back. We don't log or store these requests.
- Places and cycle routes. To find cafés, pubs, water, toilets, signed cycle routes and similar, the app asks Quietlane's map service about the area around your route. We don't log or store these requests. If our map service can't answer, the app may ask the public Overpass service run by the OpenStreetMap community instead.
- Address and place search. When you search for an address, postcode or named place, the text you type and your rough area are sent to Nominatim, the search service run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Their privacy policy is at osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy.
- Weather. For wind, rain and sunset information, your location rounded to about 100 metres is sent to Open-Meteo. No other information is included.
Our servers are hosted by Hetzner in Germany, in the European Union.
Your location
Quietlane uses your location to start routes from where you are, to guide you turn by turn, and to record your ride. If you allow it, the app keeps using your location while your iPhone is locked during a ride, so directions and recording carry on. It stops when the ride ends.
Voice and speech
When you tap the microphone, your words are turned into text so the app can understand your request. Where your iPhone supports it, this happens entirely on your device. Otherwise Apple processes the audio under Apple's privacy policy. We never receive or store recordings.
Requests are understood on your iPhone, using Apple Intelligence where available. They are not sent to us or to any AI company.
Share my ride (optional)
If you turn on Share my ride, the app creates a private link you can send to people you choose. While you're sharing, your position, speed, distance left, estimated arrival time, route line and route name are sent to Quietlane's server so the people with your link can follow you.
- Anyone who has the link can see this information, so only send it to people you trust.
- It is held in memory only, never written to disk, and not logged.
- It is deleted 30 minutes after your ride ends, 2 hours after the last update, or 12 hours after sharing started, whichever comes first.
- You can stop sharing at any time from the ride screen.
Apple Health (optional)
If you turn on “Save rides to Apple Health”, finished rides are saved to Apple Health as cycling workouts, with distance, climbing, estimated calories and route. The app may also read your heart rate (to show it with each ride) and your weight (to estimate calories). This information stays in Apple Health and on your iPhone. We never receive it, and it is never used for advertising.
Ride suggestions (optional)
If you turn on ride suggestions, your iPhone occasionally checks the weather forecast for your home area (rounded to about 100 metres, sent to Open-Meteo) and decides on the device whether to suggest a ride. Nothing about your rides is sent anywhere.
Natural voice download (optional)
If you download the natural voice, the voice files are fetched from Hugging Face and GitHub, which host them. Those services see a normal download request, including your IP address. After that, the voice works entirely on your iPhone.
Subscriptions and payments
Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. The app checks with Apple whether your subscription is active. Your free search count is kept on your iPhone.
Exports
When you export a ride or send a route to Garmin or Wahoo, the app creates a file and hands it to the app or service you choose. What happens next is governed by that app's own privacy policy.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your information.
- We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking tools.
- We don't build a profile of you or link your data across apps and websites.
- We don't keep logs of your routes, searches or location on our servers.
How long we keep information
Information on your iPhone stays until you delete it or delete the app. Share my ride data is deleted as described above. Our servers keep short technical error logs for up to 7 days to keep the service running; these don't contain your routes or location.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you have rights to access, correct and delete your personal information, to object to its use, and to complain to a regulator. Because we don't keep your rides or location, most of your information is already under your control on your iPhone. If you have a question or a request, email support@cycleai.co.uk.
If you're in the UK and unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Quietlane is not designed for children under 13. Young riders should use it with a parent or guardian.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for important changes, let you know in the app.
