Asking for a ride
Type or say the ride you want, in your own words. For example:
- “15 mile flat loop with a coffee stop on the way back”
- “An hour's ride, end at a pub”
- “Ride to work, quiet roads please”
- “25 mile loop through Winchester”
- “Loop via my usual café, avoiding the town centre”
You can mention distance or time, hills, stops, places to go through or avoid, surfaces and more. Quietlane shows up to three routes. Each one tells you how much is on cycle paths, quiet roads and busier roads.
Changing a route
On the results screen, tap Flatter, Shorter, Longer, Other way or Add a café. You can also type or say a change, such as “swap the café for a pub” or “not that way”. Tap Undo to go back.
While you're riding
Tap the microphone button and speak. You can say:
- “Take me home”, “find a coffee”, “shorter”, “add 5 miles”, “end ride”
- “How far to the café?”, “next climb?”, “is it going to rain?”, “where's the nearest water?”
- “Make it flatter” or “avoid the main road”
Changes are read back to you and start after a short countdown, so you can cancel if it misheard.
How routes are kept safe
Every route is checked road by road before you see it. Quietlane never uses motorways, avoids fast main roads without cycle lanes, and prefers signed cycle routes and traffic-free paths. Where a short stretch can't be ridden safely, such as crossing a main road, the app tells you to walk your bike. Map data can be out of date, so always ride to the conditions.
Saved places and routes
Add places like Work or Mum's in Settings, then say “ride to work” or “loop via Mum's”. To keep a route, tap Save route. Saved routes are under the bookmark button on the main screen.
Sharing your ride
Turn on “Share my ride live” before you start, then tap the share button on the ride screen to send the link. The people you send it to can see where you are and when you'll arrive. The link stops working soon after your ride ends.
Garmin and Wahoo
Tap Garmin or Wahoo on the route screen, then choose the Garmin Connect or Wahoo app from the share sheet. Tap the question mark next to it for step-by-step instructions.
Directions and your music
Spoken directions briefly lower your music or pause podcasts, then let them carry on. In Settings you can choose a natural British voice, change how directions are shown, or turn voice directions off.
Battery
Riding with GPS and the screen on uses battery. For long rides, turn off “Keep screen on while riding” and rely on voice directions and the Lock Screen.
Subscription
Your first ride with turn-by-turn directions is free, and you get 3 free route searches a month. A subscription unlocks unlimited rides and searches. Manage or cancel it in the App Store, under your Apple Account.
